Timber design has been revived since the 1970s and is now experiencing a thriving renaissance of the ancient skills. Timber framed design structures are different from conventional wood framed buildings in several ways. A Timber House uses fewer, larger wooden members, commonly using timbers with dimensions in the range of 6″ to 12″ as opposed to common wood framing which uses many more timbers with their dimensions usually in the 2″ to 10″ range. The methods of fastening the frame members also differ; in conventional framing the members are joined using nails or other mechanical fasteners while timber framing uses a traditional mortice and tenon or more complex joints which are usually fastened using only wooden pegs. THe main topic of conversation last week seemed to be centred on Valentine’s Day, and I must admit I am probably like most men: I sit on my hands and let the day go by without making too much fuss. I did think this year I’d give the missus a bit of a treat so last Friday afternoon I popped up to butcher Bagshaws in Butterton and got him to whip the tail off a beast he slaughtered for us the previous Monday, for Jackie’s boxed beef business. Call me old fashioned or just a stick-in-the-mud, but when it comes to proper grub, and something to eat that you would die for, it just doesn’t get better than a good old fat oxtail that has spent 12 hours bubbling away in the oven of the Aga with a handful of vegetables and a bit of salt and pepper.
