What Are the Causes of Acne?
Today, we see a wide range of acne treatments available. While some products may be effective, others can even worsen the condition. Before seeking a remedy, the first thing to do is to understand what causes the condition.
A combination of factors contributes to acne. The main culprit is sebum. There is a number of sebum producing sebaceous glands on the skin. These glands may be associated with a hair follicle and a hair. Together, it is called pilosebaceous unit. They are found mainly on the face, chest, upper neck etc. When the sebaceous glands produce more sebum, it can clog the pores of the skin. Such clogged pores are called comedones. A comedone may be a blackhead or a whitehead. A bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes thrives in the follicles which are present in areas of the skin that are rich in sebum. Infection by these bacterium triggers an immune response which results in inflammation and irritation. The result is the formation of papules, pustules and nodules.
The next question is what causes the excess production of sebum? Excess production of the androgen hormone during teenage is one the contributing factors for acne in teenagers. In women, hormone fluctuations that occur at the time of menstruation or pregnancy can trigger acne. Starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne due to hormone fluctuations. Genetics seems to play a role in excess sebum production. Stress is known to be a contributing factor for acne although the association is yet to be scientifically proved. Some drugs can also cause acne. These include lithium, barbiturates etc. A combination of high humidity, sweating and friction from clothes, helmets etc can also cause acne. Some oil based cosmetics can worsen or even trigger acne.
Since the factors which contribute to acne are manifold, it is essential to take a few steps to avoid acne or acne flare ups. There are several good acne products available over the counter.
